Hardworking Neutral Colors Bring Calm and Serenity

Hardworking neutrals still trending into 2020

There are many decisions when moving into a new home or when it’s time to refresh and update your current home.  Perhaps one of the most drawn out decisions is what color you are putting on those fine walls of yours….especially if you’ve decided you want to go neutral.

I met up with Becky McAlpine,  Interior and Color Design expert with local Benjamin Moore East Cobb Paint Center.  She says neutrals are trending toward light and airy.  Neutrals offer a calm and serenity that appeals greatly to homeowners. She is seeing some clients paint the trim, ceilings and walls all the same color.  This works particularly well in small rooms, narrow halls with lots of doors, and rooms with low ceilings.  If you want a bit of contrast, you can go a shade lighter or darker for trim work and doors.

According to the experts at Benjamin Moore, “Warm whites have undertones of red and yellow, resulting in a soft glow and welcoming mood. Cool whites have undertones of blue, green and gray, creating a space that looks crisp, clean and luminous.”

I find that the light in my home makes the samples look different than at the store. It helps to paint a few samples on the wall. I love the pint sizes that Benjamin Moore offers. I am always amazed at how different the colors can look in my home depending on the time of the day and on the location of the room. Here is how some of my samples looked.

Here are six neutrals popular with designers:

Sea pearl BM 961 can be used for wall and trim colors. It works well on all cabinets and doors too.

Swiss Coffee OC – 45 has a warmer tone and is used quite often as trim.  But can be used as a wall color to offer a tranquil, serene environment. This color is part of the Off-White Color collection.

Mascarpone AF – 20   This use-anywhere shade of off-white taps a soft yellow undertone to achieve the versatility and creamy richness of its namesake cheese.

Chantilly Lace OC –  65  has very cool undertones and can be used with a color like Balboa Mist OC -27 to create great contrast.  Chantilly Lace is a clean, crisp white.

Manchester Tan is neutral on the khaki side. This one is classic and elegant and goes well with whites and beiges.

Balboa Mist OC – 27  brightens up spaces that have been painted darker in the past and make the space look fresh and current.  The cool undertones are a bit more gray.

If you are looking to paint the exterior of your home, be sure to ask your paint store if your color comes in the specially formulated exterior paint. Chantilly Lace, White Dove, Simply White and Mscarpone are great colors for the home’s exterior if you are looking to go white.
